It's time to rethink
Marsh Street charges.
Parking charges at Marsh Street Car Park were introduced in October 2025. Now that the scheme has been in place for several months, I believe it is important to review how these changes are affecting residents, local businesses, and Rothwell town centre.
I have heard concerns clearly from both businesses and residents who rely on the car park. Marsh Street is vital to the success of shops and hospitality venues along Commercial Street, as well as to people travelling into town to shop, access services, and spend time locally.
There is growing concern that the charges may be discouraging visits, particularly when nearby areas such as Wakefield offer longer periods of free parking, making it more attractive for people to go elsewhere.
I am calling on Leeds City Council to listen to residents and businesses, properly assess the impact of these charges, and consider changes by extending the free parking period to help support a thriving, accessible, and successful town centre in Rothwell.
