Wakefield WW2 Veteran Celebrates 100th Birthday with Visit from Local MP and Messages from the King and Prime Minister

A much‑loved Wakefield resident and Second World War veteran has celebrated his 100th birthday with a series of heartfelt tributes recognising his remarkable life and service.

Harry Birdsall, who served in the Royal Army Service Corps and helped evacuate prisoners from the Bergen‑Belsen concentration camp in 1945, marked his milestone birthday surrounded by family, friends, and well‑wishers from across the community.

As is tradition for centenarians, Harry received a special birthday card from His Majesty The King. He was also honoured with a personal letter from the Prime Minister, recognising his service and the extraordinary contribution he has made to the country.

To mark the occasion, Simon Lightwood, MP for Wakefield, visited Harry at his home to pass on his congratulations in person.

Speaking after the visit, Simon Lightwood MP said:

“It was a real privilege to spend time with Harry on such a special day.

"His stories, his humour, and his incredible service to our country are truly inspiring.

"It is testament to the man that Harry is that he's not asked for gifts - just donations to the Royal British Legion, who have supported him.

"Reaching 100 is an extraordinary milestone, and Harry deserves every bit of recognition he is receiving.”

Harry said:

“It’s a great achievement reaching 100, especially after falling and breaking a hip last year. I’ve had a very busy life and seen lots of changes over the years; some good, some bad, and now I’m lucky to have many people around me who help me make me feel special, and I want to say thank you to them all.”
