Safer Streets this summer

This summer, I’m proud to support a bold and much-needed initiative to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour in Wakefield city centre. As your MP, I’ve heard from countless residents and business owners who are fed up with the disruption caused by shoplifting, aggressive behaviour, and street crime. That’s why I welcome the government’s “summer blitz” on town centre crime - because we all deserve to feel safe where we live, work, and shop.
Wakefield is one of over 500 towns and cities taking part in Labour's Safer Streets scheme. This means we’ll see a significant increase in police presence during peak times, with West Yorkshire Police receiving an additional 100 officers and 45 special constables this year. In our city alone, the number of officers and PCSOs is set to double.
But this isn’t just about enforcement. It’s about prevention too. Local councils, police, and community partners are working together to create vibrant, welcoming spaces. That includes reviewing public space protection orders to tackle aggressive begging and substance misuse, and ensuring young people have access to positive activities throughout the summer holidays.
Earlier this year, we also launched a new anti-social behaviour task force with Wakefield Council, which has already led to more visible patrols and stronger enforcement in the city centre.
This is a turning point. We’re sending a clear message: Wakefield will not be a place where crime goes unchecked. Our high streets should be places of pride - not fear.
Let’s work together to make this summer a safer, more positive one for everyone in Wakefield.
