It’s been a joy to join in the VE Day festivities taking place across Wakefield and Rothwell today!
I started the day at the brilliant street party at The Ridings Shopping Centre, where the atmosphere was full of community spirit and celebration. It was lovely to catch up with friends from Age UK Wakefield District and Home Instead Wakefield – Home Care & Live-In Care, who do such important work supporting older people in our area. The bunting was flying, the tea was flowing, and the smiles were everywhere. 🫖
Later, I called into the Wrenthorpe Community Association’s event at Wrenthorpe Village Hall, where the celebrations continued with beautiful live music and a truly moving rendition of “God Save the King” to round off the day. 🎼
These events are a wonderful reminder of the strength and warmth of our local communities. While today has been full of fun, music, and togetherness, it’s also a time for reflection and remembrance. We honour the courage and sacrifice of those who served, those who endured, and those who gave their lives during the Second World War. Their bravery secured the freedoms we enjoy today, and we must never forget their legacy.
Thank you to everyone who helped organise these fantastic events and to all who took part. It’s been a truly special day.
