Better Buses Bill

Over the past month, I’ve had the privilege of leading the Government’s Bus Services Bill through its Committee Stage in Parliament. This is one of the most important parts of the law-making process - where every clause, every word, is scrutinised to make sure it delivers real change for the people we serve.

And this Bill does just that.

For too long, our communities in Wakefield, Rothwell, and across the country have been let down by a broken bus system. Private operators have been able to cut routes, hike fares, and leave passengers stranded - with little to no accountability.

This landmark legislation is the biggest shake-up of our bus network in decades. And it’s long overdue.

🛠 What the Bill Delivers

✅ Franchising Powers for Local Leaders

For the first time in years, local authorities will have the power to take back control. That means they can set routes, timetables, and service standards - ensuring buses run where they’re needed, not just where they’re profitable.

✅ £955 Million in Government Funding

This isn’t just policy - it’s backed by real investment. The Government is putting nearly a billion pounds into improving bus services across England until 2026.

✅ A Fairer, Greener Future

Reliable public transport is key to tackling climate change and cutting congestion. This Bill supports cleaner, greener buses and helps reduce our reliance on cars - especially in rural and underserved areas.

🚌 What This Means for Wakefield and Rothwell

No more postcode lottery. Whether you live in the heart of Wakefield or a village on the outskirts of Rothwell, you deserve a bus service that works for you. That means:

  • Buses that turn up on time

  • Routes that connect people to jobs, schools, and healthcare

  • Fares that are fair and affordable

I’ve been working closely with West Yorkshire Mayor Tracy Brabin and our local councils to make sure this legislation delivers for our region. Together, we’re pushing for a bus network that puts people before profit.

I’ve heard from so many of you - parents who can’t get their kids to school, pensioners cut off from town centres, workers forced to rely on expensive taxis. This Bill is for you. It’s about restoring trust in public transport and making sure no one is left behind.
